My approach to black and gray animal realism involves working heavily from photo reference of the chosen animal. When choosing the reference material I take into mind contrast, light source, and view or vantage point of the animal to best fit the desired location of body part the tattoo is being placed. My interpretation can sometimes include line structure and I’m always open to background elements and or negative space to create more interest or flow to the tattoo.
